Floyd Wayne Fowlkes, 82, passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Born on November 18, 1942, he was a son to Floyd Ray and Lois Gilmore Fowlkes. Wayne graduated from Amory High School (‘60), then Mississippi State University (‘71) with a degree in civil engineering. After the death of his father, he took over Fowlkes Contracting where he ran the strip mining company until he retired at the age of 55. His employees would fondly remember him as an exceptional boss who always took care of them. He married the former Carolyn McGhee on January 26, 1978, and was a devoted husband and father who loved his family deeply. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, gardening, and hunting, often traveling to hunt elk, turkey, and ducks. A lifelong MSU Bulldog supporter, he enjoyed attending football and basketball games, along with numerous bowl games and SEC tournaments. As a member of the Bulldog Club for many years he was recognized for his generous giving. He was a member of St. Andrews Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home with Rev. Kris Rowse officiating. Burial will follow in the Haughton Memorial Park.
In addition to his wife of 47 years, Carolyn McGhee Fowlkes, he is survived by two daughters daughters, Laura Leigh Fowlkes (Jen), Fulton, Lisa Kay Johnson (Sonny), Huntsville; and three sons, Lonnie Williams, Amory, David Fowlkes (Lauren), Houston, TX, and Matthew Fowlkes (Krista), Monroe, LA; grandchildren, Joshua Johnson, Benjamin Johnson (Kelcey),, Madelyn Williams, Brady Williams, Tucker Fowlkes, Wyatt Fowlkes, Everett Fowlkes, Sohini Fowlkes, Hudson Fowlkes, Heidi Runge, and Chandler Runge; niece, Lee Ann Moredcai (Art), Brandon, MS; many cousins, nieces, and nephews; special friend and care giver, Jean Sims.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, and sister, Shirley Parham.
Pallbearers will be Glenn Hardin, Andy Cantrell, Doug Fowlkes, Steve Fowlkes, Joshua Johnson, and Benjamin Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Cantrell and Brady Williams.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
