Hatley- Sammie Dale Smith, 74, died Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Merit Health Gilmore Memorial Hospital. Born March 5, 1941 in Monroe County, he was a son of James David and Mary Lee Irvin Smith. He married Teresa Ann Easley Smith. Dale attended Hatley School, was a member of Hatley Primitive Baptist Church and proudly served in the Mississippi Army National Guard. A man of many talents from gunsmithing to industrial maintenance, he worked several area jobs, later retiring from the Town of Hatley in the water department. Fun loving, Dale was often found pulling practical jokes or telling one of his many stories. Never meeting a stranger, he was a friend to everyone he met and he especially loved kids. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. His family, especially his grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Teresa Ann Smith, Hatley; daughters, Michelle Smith, Hatley and Allison Henrichs (Joel), Amory; son, Rob Smith (Rhonda), Guntown; grandchildren, Christopher Smith (Kelli), Corey Robert Smith, Corey N. Smith (Chandler), Samantha Smith and Gabby Smith; sisters, June Boyd, Hatley, Peggy Hoots (Doug), Hatley, Joyce McDill (Gerald), Vicksburg, Jeanette Chism (Larry), Tupelo, Ellen Hall (Tom), Hatley and Dianna Smith, Hatley; brothers, James I. Smith (Mary Nell), Las Vegas and Tommie Smith (Clara), Hatley; a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, David Glenn Smith.
Funeral Services will be held at Hatley Primitive Baptist Church on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at 2 PM, with Elder Tim Cunningham and Elder Tony Lester officiating. Burial will follow in Hatley Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bart Smith, Mark Shields, Barry Smith, Terry Smith, Allen Boyd, Steve Young, Robert Irvin and Garland Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald Kent, Harold West, Wayne Jernigan and Wayne Hadaway.
Dale will lie in state at the church Thursday from 1 pm until the service hour at 2 PM.
Visitation will be Wednesday Evening from 5-8 PM at Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home in Amory.
