Jimmy Vaughan

March 7, 1936 — June 15, 2016

Jimmy Louis Vaughan, 80, passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at his home in Hatley. He was born March 7, 1936 in Hatley to Herbert and Merle Justice Vaughan. A graduate of Hatley High School, he married Janice Farrar and he was a member of the Mississippi National Guard. From the age of 16, Jimmy was fascinated with aviation and saved money through high school to pay for the $10 flying lessons and on May 24, 1954 he soloed in a J-3 Cub and from there his career launched. Working for 7 years as an agricultural pilot, he was later invited to become part of the aviation staff at Amory Garment Company in which he flew for 33 years “retiring” on July 23, 1999. The very next day, he became the pilot for Dowdle Aviation and was their pilot up until his health prevented him in May of 2016. With no intention of retiring, Jimmy flew over 20,000 hours in 12 different commercial aircraft and numerous single-engine aircraft with 13,000 of those hours being in a Cessna Citation multi-engine jet. Given to only 2 pilots each year in the United States and with an impeccable safety record of 50 years with no accidents, Jimmy was awarded by the FAA the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award and was noted has having the smallest FAA report. Above all, serving with great humility Jimmy was a song leader since his youth, a Bible class teacher for over 50 years, and dutifully served as an elder for the Amory Church of Christ, sharing the Gospel at every opportunity he could. With a great legacy, he cherished the time spent with his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. His hobbies included hummingbirds and watching Andy Griffith. Always having the time, he enjoyed visiting with friends. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Friday, June 17, 2016 at the Amory Church of Christ in Amory with Ministers Philip Hathcock, James Wyers, and grandson, Jamie Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the New Hope Cemetery. Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home of Amory is in charge of the arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Janice Farrar Vaughan of Hatley; one son, Jay B. Vaughan (Teresa) of Hatley; 4 daughters, Connie Vaughan of Hatley, Kittie Edwards (Larry) of Hatley, Tami Hester (Tony) of Hatley, and Marla Chism (Jeff) of Amory; one brother, Danny Vaughn (Bonnie) of Amory; one sister, Beverly Howell (Dale) of Hatley; 9 grandchildren, Kim McDonald (John), Jake Walters (Stephanie), Jamie Edwards (Khristen), Ross Hester (Samantha), Collin Hester, Brooke Cantrell (Colt), Jayla Vaughan, Jeffery Chism (Maggie), and Jordan Chism; 14 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tabitha Edwards and by his parents. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Al Gillentine, Garry Scarboro, and the elders and deacons of the Amory Church of Christ. Visitation will be 5 until 8 p.m. on Thursday evening at the Amory Church of Christ. Memorials may be made to the Amory Church of Christ, P.O.
