Hurshel Ray Barnes, 79, passed away May 25, 2023 at his home surrounded by family in Dekalb, Illinois after an extended illness. He was born to Orestus and Varleria Walley Barnes in Prentiss County March 12, 1944. He lived much of his life in Nettleton, Ms. as a factory worker at Reed’s Manufacturing Company. He was a member of the Shiloh Hunting Club as well as a member of the Nettleton Masonic Lodge prior to his move to Illinois where he worked for the Dekalb Daily Chronicle. He loved fishing, hunting, antiques, flea markets but mostly spending time with his family and friends.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 1 PM on Thursday, June 1, 2023 Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home in Amory with Bro. Elbert Ray Bennett and Bro. Ron Cottom officiating. Private burial will follow at East Marietta Cemetery in Prentiss County.
Hurshel is survived by the love of his life Elizabeth “Betty” Patterson; his children: Judy Richardson of Nettleton, Melinda Basham (Jeff) of Saltillo, Darrell Barnes (Candi) of Nettleton and Richie Patterson (Andrea) of Arkansas; his grandchildren: Amanda Patterson (Jeremy), Steven Basham (Lisa), Briceson Richardson, Audrianna Doss, Bo Patterson (Baily) and Harley Paden (Timothy); and 5 great grandchildren; his brothers: Quinton Lee Barnes (Margaret) of New Chapel, Randy Barnes (Connie) of Nettleton, Wayne Barnes of Nettleton; his sisters: Peggy Sullivan of Nettleton, Patricia Williams of Wren, and Lucille West of Shannon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Harold, Horace, and Charles Clinton Barnes and one sister Pauline McDaniel; son in law, Jacky Richardson.
Pallbearers will be Briceson Richardson, Bo Patterson, Glenn Barnes, John Barnes, Junior McDaniel and Tim Denton. Honorary pallbearer will be Jeremy Patterson, Alan Kilgore and Tony Williams.
Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 from 5-8 PM.
