Amory

Hellon Bernice Mize Duncan Ream, 91, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.  Born on June 5, 1932, in Quincy, she was a daughter to James Thomas and Alice Mildred West Mize.  She graduated from Hatley High School and she married Leroy Duncan.  After his death, she married Dr. Frank Ream.  For many years, she worked in the area garment industry.  Also, she worked in a local restaurant, and even made fans and heaters after the garment industry left.  A woman of many talents, when she was younger, she hosted fish fries for as many as 30 or more friends and family members.  Friday nights were also special because she always had something special prepared to eat for her children’s friends whether it was an all-you-can eat spaghetti dinner or some other concoction.  It was eaten and enjoyed by all.  Later, Hellon became involved with the Disabled American Veterans where she was the only one allowed to make gravy and biscuits for their Saturday breakfasts.  Rising to be the state commander for Mississippi, she traveled to various conventions giving speeches and raising awareness.  She knitted afghans which she gave to wheelchair bound veterans and other family friends.  She was a member of First Baptist Church in Amory and worked with several ladies at First Friends.  She attended Bigbee Baptist Church for a short time with her son until her health did not permit to continue; however, she watched and listened to the Facebook broadcast.  Hellon led a wonderful life and at 91 years, she stated many times she was ready when the Lord called her.
