Barry Strevel

January 28, 1956 — December 28, 2016

John Barry Strevel, 60, died on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 in Destin, FL. Born January 28, 1956 Barry was a son to Thomas G. and Mary Bruff Strevel. Growing up in Aberdeen, he attended Aberdeen High School and started working at a young age in the family business, Strevel & Sons. There, Barry learned the value of hard work and then later started his own construction business in 1998, JBS Construction. Along with his wife, this small business grew into one of the top construction companies in the Southeast. Also, he and his wife owned D & B Land Development, Becker Plumbing, B & D Beach Properties, and Barry was co-founder of Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home in Amory. An unwavering patriot, he loved his country and became involved in local politics becoming the chairman of the Monroe County Republican Party, later stepping down as chairman to run a campaign for the Mississippi Senate District 7. Barry loved his community and along with his friend, Roy Starks, he oversaw the renovation of the Frisco Park in downtown Amory, a project in which he took great pride. He dutifully served on the Frisco Park Committee, the City of Amory Planning Committee, and the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce as chairman of industrial development. Above all, Barry had a deep rooted faith in God which guided his life. He was a founding member of Cornerstone Family Fellowship where he served on the church board. Earlier in life, he taught Sunday school for 12-14 year olds acting as a mentor to countless young people. Working tirelessly to make Amory a better place, he was known as a man of First Class standards and was determined to see things all the way through. Considered as one of the most caring, giving, and loving persons one would ever meet, Barry’s pride was shown through his family. He enjoyed family trips to the coast while giving undivided affection to his wife. His children and grandchildren were the sparkle of his eye and cherished the time he had to spend with them. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at the Cornerstone Family Fellowship located at 60064 Cotton Gin Port Road, Amory, with Bro. Greg Huguley and Bro.
