Ellie "Pete" Vaughan

Ellie Lee "Pete" Vaughan, Jr., 91, died on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at his home in Hatley. Born December 22, 1924 in the Parham Community of Monroe County, he was a son of Ellie L., Sr. and Mary Ella Lavies Vaughan. He married Gladys Tubb and he was a member of the Hatley Missionary Baptist Church. Attending Hatley School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on September 2, 1943 and served until January 8, 1946 receiving his high school diploma while in the service. Pete, after his discharge from the Navy, enrolled at Mississippi State University in 1946 and received his B.S. degree in 1949 and later received his Master’s in Education degree in 1959. Pete taught school for over 25 years later serving as Superintendent of Education for Monroe County Schools for 6 years. Following his retirement from education, he went to work for True Temper Sports in Amory later retiring. In his younger years, he was a boxer and his hobbies included oil painting, fishing, whittling monkeys out of peach seeds, watching Westerns and MSU Football. He cherished his time spent with his family. He was a Mason. Funeral Services will be 3 p.m. on Monday, August 8, 2016 at the Cleveland-Moffett Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Lloyd Sweatt officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Survivors include his daughter, Cheryl Williams (Rufus) of Glenpool, OK; 3 sisters, Sarah Pearson of Hatley, Margaret Noe of Hatley, and Jane Sanders (L.C.) of Hamilton, MS; 9 grandchildren, Rufus Williams, III (Kris), Wendy Terry (George), Rob Whitehead (Kristie), Natalie Williams, Seth Whitehead (Rebecca), Lee Vaughan, Cassie Vaughan Chism, Patricia Givens (Bill) and Nicholas Williams; 9 great grandchildren, Brandan Williams (Annika), Breanne Williams, Brent Williams, Haylie Chism, Selah Whitehead, Abigail Chism, Brantley Givens, Emma Whitehead, and Oliver Givens; daughter-in-law, Sandra Vaughan of Hatley; son-in-law, Sam Whitehead of Mantachie; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Patricia Whitehead; son, Ellie “Lil Pete” Vaughan, III, 4 brothers, Buck, Aaron, Gordon, and Cecil Vaughan; and brothers-in-law Lee Roy Pearson and Buck Noe. Pallbearers will be Rob Whitehead, Seth Whitehead, Lee Vaughan, George King, Lavis Vaughan, Rufus Williams, Jr., Stanley Farrar, and Lewis Sanders. Honorary pallbearers will be Rufus Williams, III, Nicholas Williams, Kenny Noe, Van Pearson, Tim Vaughan, Cecil Vaughan, Jr., George Terry, Bill Givens, and Sam Whitehead. Visitation will be from 5:30 until 8 p.m. on Sunday evening at the funeral home.
